A
basecoat plaster for application to concrete or Rhinoboard
Cretestone is a vermiculited, retarded hemihydrate Gypsum plaster and is suitable
as a basecoat plaster and a finishing plaster for application to concrete soffits,
concrete blocks and RHINOBOARD. For internal use only.
MIXING
Add 40 kg CRETESTONE slowly to 22 litres of clean water. Allow to soak for 5
minutes. Stir slowly to a creamy tex-ture. DO NOT add foreign matter to CRETESTONE.
ALWAYS use clean utensils. Mix with clean water only and in a clean container.
DO NOT overstir. DO NOT mix more CRETESTONE than can be used in 45 minutes (nor
more than 2 bags per mixing container). DO NOT re-stir nor add more CRETESTONE
or water to the mix after mix-ing is complete.
N.B Add water ratio.
Water ratio is an approximate figure. Workability can be altered by adding or
reduc-ing the volume of water.
APPLICATION
1. Cretestone to concrete surfaces:
On rough concrete surfaces no hacking or slushing is necessary. Where steel
shuttering and/or grease has been used, or proprietary compounds have been mixed
with the concrete, special care should be taken to clean the surface. Grease
or oil of any description is always detrimental to the bond of any plastering
material, and if not cleaned entirely from the surface, could result in bond
failure between the CRETESTONE and the concrete. We recommend that the concrete
surface is scrubbed with a cleansing agent to remove the grease or oil. All
traces of the cleansing agent must be removed by rinsing with copious quantities
of water. Brush off all loose particles of cement using a wire brush. Apply
GRIPPON plaster bonding liquid using a brush or roller and whilst it is still
wet and tacky apply the CRETESTONE neatly to a thickness of not less than 5
mm by using a steel trowel as follows: Apply one layer of CRETESTONE directly
and evenly to the con-crete with a steel trowel, pressing the CRETESTONE well
onto the concrete surface. The pressure is essen-tial, as without it, air may
be trapped between the CRETESTONE and the concrete, destroying the bond. As
soon as this layer has stiffened, but not set, apply another layer of approximately
4 mm thick, with a steel trowel. Use a feathered-edge straight edge to rule
off and straighten the plaster. Where hollows show between the feathered-edge
and plaster surface, addi-tional CRETESTONE must be applied and ruled off again.
Apply a finishing layer of CRETESTONE. Allow to stand until the initial set
takes place (25-35 minutes). 69 As this layer begins to stiffen, temper the
surface with just sufficient water on a brush preceding the trowel, and trowel
to a smooth finish free of blemishes.

2. Application to Rhinoboard
Apply CRETESTONE neatly to a thickness of not less than 5 mm as follows: Apply
one layer of CRETESTONE directly and evenly with a steel trowel, pressing the
CRETESTONE well onto the RHINOBOARD surface and well into the wire scrim or
FIBATAPE at joints. The pres-sure is essential, as without it air may be trapped
between the CRETESTONE and RHINOBOARD, thus destroying the bond. As soon as
this layer has stiffened, but not set, apply another layer with a steel trowel
of approximately 4 mm thick. Use a feather-edged straight edge to rule off and
straighten the plaster. Where hol-lows show between the feather-edge and plaster
sur-face, additional CRETESTONE must be applied and ruled off again. Allow to
stand until the initial set takes place (25-35 minutes). Apply a finishing layer
of CRETE-STONE. As this layer begins to stiffen, temper the sur-face with just
sufficient water on a brush preceding the trowel, and trowel to a smooth finish
free of blemishes.
3. Covering capacity
Applied 6 mm thick the coverage will be approximately 7m 2 /40 kg.
4. Decoration
Before decorating check the entire surface carefully to see that the plaster
has set hard and is dry. Do not sandpaper CRETESTONE. It is recommended that
all CRETESTONE surfaces be sealed with an oil or solvent based sealer such as
Plascon Brick Dressing or Plascon Acrylic Glaze Coat. Allow to dry for 24 hours
before applying two coats of paint as required.
NB: Epoxy paints not to be applied onto CRETESTONE.
