Marley Flooring was established in 1953 and previously formed part of Marley SA (PTY) Ltd which was owned by the Belgium based Etex Group. During 2004 a black owned investment company named Empowerment Financial Investment Company – EFIC (PTY) Ltd acquired Marley Flooring. At the same time, a chemicals business, Safic Holdings Limited acquired 32% of the local operation of Marley Flooring.

EFIC was born from a strategic partnership of Historically Disadvantaged Individuals and companies adamant in empowering and adding value to diverse economies. With that in mind, EFIC provided the necessary footing for Marley Flooring to become the first Black Enterprise Flooring Manufacturer in South Africa; and the company’s name was subsequently changed to FloorworX Africa (Pty) Ltd, trading as Marley FloorworX.

Safic is an ISO-accredited manufacturer and vendor of a wide range of environmentally-friendly chemical cleaning and maintenance agents sold principally into the mining, engineering, hospitality, government and construction sectors.

The business was established in 1981 and is based in Steeledale in the South Rand. It has the dominant market share of certain specific chemical cleaning and maintenance agents and has earned numerous awards, such as the Chemical Safety category in the Mail & Guardian’s ‘Environmental, Greening the Future’ competition in both 2005 and 2006, for the eco-sensitive products it has developed.

The rationale for the acquisition was that Safic supplies the principal chemicals and cleaning agents and equipment that are used to maintain Marley flooring once it has been laid.

In June 2006 FloorworX became a 100%-owned subsidiary of Safic.

The combined flooring and chemicals business, Safic Holdings Limited, became the latest in a long line of companies in the construction sector to go public when it listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange’s AltX on the 23 November, 2006.

The business is currently 33% black-owned, with some prominent black businessmen, including Dr Malesela Motlata and Manne Dipico, listed as shareholders.

With over 50 years of business experience, FloorworX has advanced as a manufacturer and distributor of a comprehensive range of resilient floor coverings, semi-flexible tiles, fully flexible tiles and flexible vinyl sheets (of which FloorworX is the only producer in South Africa) and; safety flooring, vinyl laminates, static control tiles, rubber and sports flooring.

The company’s ISO 9001:2000 accreditation has engraved their quality of products and services on innumerable industries.

FloorworX currently enjoys around 64% of the resilient hard flooring market in South Africa. The division now contributes some 72% of the nascent company’s annual turnover and is currently heavily involved in State infrastructural development projects such as hospitals, airports and schools.

Amongst its principal parastatal clients are Eskom, Transnet, Telkom and SAA. It also supplies many large private sector clients, including Medi_Clinic and Netcare.

FloorworX has aspirations to diversify further into the construction industry through the acquisition of complementary businesses. Part of the capital raised through the listing will be used to implement this acquisition strategy.
