4. First Aid Measures:

Main  hazard: Temporary mechanical irritation and itching on skin and eye contact. Temporary irritation of upper airways

Health effects - ingestion: None

Flammability: Non-flammable

Eye contact: Rinse eye with clean tepid water for 10 minutes or until irritation ceases

Skin contact: Wash gently with lukewarm water and soap

Inhalation or ingestion: None

5. Fire Fighting Measures:

6. Accidental Release Measures:

Combustion products of binder: carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, other hydrocarbons and water.

Extinguishing media: water, foam, carbon dioxide, dry powder

Protective clothing: Firefighters entering an area where fibrous glass is present, must wear full protective gear, including eye and respiratory protection

Small spills: Use a vacuum cleaner

Large spills: Spray with water to suppress dust. Collect wet material with shovels or front-end loader

Never use compressed air to clean an area where fibrous glass has been spilt

7. Handling and Storage:

8. Exposure Control/Personal Protection:

Handling/storage precautions: Store and handle in a manner that prevents spread of airborne fibrous glass dust in the workplace.

Occupational exposure limit: Recommended limit 2 fibres/ml air (Act 85 of 1993)

Engineering control measures: Local exhaust ventilation with hood; or process enclosure, to contain dust

Respiratory protection: FF1 type respiratory protection mask

Hand protection: Gloves may be worn

Biodegradability: Dissolves slowly in physiological solutions; otherwise persistent

No known adverse environmental effects

13. Disposal Considerations:

14. Transport information:

Dispose of in non-toxic waste landfill

Handle so as to limit dust generation

Transport in closed packaging or container to limit escape of fibrous dust

15. Regulatory information:

16. Other information:

South African Legislation: Occupational Health and Safety Act; Hazardous Chemical Substances Regulations - recommended occupational exposure limit 2 fibre/ml air

Fibrous glass insulation is safe when handled correctly
