CHOPPED STRANDS

K405 Chopped Strands
K405 is a versatile chopped strand that was originally designed for polyester moulding compounds. The product has also been used successfully in epoxy moulding compounds as well as with dry blending in phenolic applications. K405 chopped strands are used in a broad range of applications including electrical, transportation and food grade moulding compounds.

Features

  • Excellent Pigmentability
  • Low Fuzz
  • Excellent Laminate Properties
  • Product Consistency
  • Works in Compression or Injection Moulding
  • Excellent Electrical Properties

Benefits
Excellent Pigmentability. K405 chopped strands are easily pigmented, allowing the moulder to use a wide range of colours.

Low Fuzz
K405 chopped strands possess low fuzz or fly, minimizing clumping.

Exceptional Laminate Properties
The K405 product has excellent laminate properties, meeting a wide range of customers' laminate requirements.

Product Consistency
K405 chopped strands are highly consistent, providing uniform product to the customer. The versatility of the K405 product makes it suitable for compression or injection moulding, allowing the customer to use one product.

Excellent Electrical Properties
K405 possesses exceptional electrical properties and is used in a variety of U.L. applications.

Product Data
K405 is available in 3, 6, 12,5 and 18 mm lengths as standard and has a "K" 13,7 micron fibre diameter.

Processes
The K405 product is recommended for moulding compounds using 5% to 30% glass content and in friction compounds using 5% to 15% glass content. In bulk moulding compounds it is recommended to add the chopped strands last and use only sufficient mixing time to wet the fibre bundles. Overmixing will shorten fibre length and reduce properties.

A plough or sigma blade type mixer is recommended. In dry phenolic mixing the glass fibres are typically added last and mixed for a minimal time until uniform. Overmixing will result in fuzz clumping which will reduce properties and create non-uniformities in the mix. A plough blade type mixer is recommended.

Packaging
K405 is supplied in 25 kg heavy duty Polythene bags for the 3 and 6mm, and 20 kg for the 12,5 and 18mm.

Approval
K405 is manufactured and tested in accordance with the Quality Management System of Owens Corning South Africa which conforms to the requirements of SABS ISO 9002.

Storage
It is recommended that fibreglass is kept at a temperature not exceeding 25'C and a relative humidity not exceeding 65%.

Owens Corning South Africa reserves the right to change this specification without noticed.
