ROCKWOOL

The Owens Corning South Africa Rockwool range of mineral wool products is specially designed for the thermal and acoustic insulation of pipes, equipment or vessels forming part of industrial process plants.

Specifying Owens Corning means that the correct products for industrial process applications can be selected from a single range of fire safe mineral wool insulation, with no need for a confusing mix of materials with different performance characteristics.

Standards
All Rockwool products are generally manufactured according to BS3958.
BS3958: Specification for thermal insulating materials
Part 3: Metal mesh faced man-made mineral fibre mattress
Part 4: Bonded preformed man-made mineral fibre pipe sections
Part 5: Bonded man-made mineral fibre slabs (for use at temperatures above 50ºC).

Why Insulate?
Insulation is often taken for granted. There are many, often complementary, reasons why insulation should be widely and properly specified.

  • By reducing heat loss, energy is saved and running costs reduced.
  • Temperature of contents can be better and more economically controlled.
  • Surface temperature can be reduced to a safe level, which increases personnel safety.
  • Insulation reduces random heat gain which makes buildings more ,pleasant in summer and easier to control in winter.
  • Uninsulated small diameter steam pipes can become choked with internal condensation. This can be minimised.
  • Noise break out from pipes or ducts can be reduced and internal noise in ducts can be suppressed.

Rockwool Products

Rockwool products are manufactured by melting a mixture of inorganic materials in a furnace. The molten rock is then spun into non- combustible wool and coated with a thermosetting resin before being compressed/moulded and cured into the finished product.

Stability
Rockwool products are made from non-combustible mineral wool giving stable, fire safe materials suitable for a wide range of thermal, acoustic and fire protection applications up to continuous operating temperatures of 650ºC.

Chloride Content
Rockwool products contain inherently low levels of water- leachable chlorides. Rockwool products will not cause stress corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless steel.

Fire Safety
In considering fire performance, the products to be used should minimise transmission of fire, add minimal combustible materials, and not generate smoke or toxic fumes, when exposed to heat. All Rockwool products are:

  • Non-combustible according to SABS 0177 Part V
  • Class 1 Fire Index according to SABS 0177 Part III

Biosolubility
The fibres from Owens Corning South Africa Rockwool products are biosoluble, They will dissolve in lung fluid within a matter of days and pass through the body naturally.

Water Repellency
Rockwool preformed pipe sections are available ex-stock in a water repellent grade. Other Rockwool products can be manufactured in a water repellent grade on request.

Moulded/Specialised Products
Rockwool insulation can be designed and moulded to meet specific customer product requirements.

Cutting and Shaping
Rockwool preformed pipe sections, boards and rolls are easily cut and worked on site using a sharp knife.

Finishes
All products can be faced with a variety of finishes to provide vapour barriers, colour coding or additional mechanical strength.

Handling  and Storage
All Rockwool products should be stored and handled with care to maintain ex-works quality. The packaging will provide some protection, but care should be taken to keep the material dry at all times. Extra protection should always be provided when storing outdoors.
