Guide
to Building regulations |
The application of safety glazing materials is laid down
in SABS 0400-1990 (The code of Practice of the National
Building Regulations.)
SABS 0400 in turn refers to SABS 0137 (the code of Practice
of the installation of glazing materials in buildings) the
definition of safety glazing is covered by SABS 1263-1.
It includes an impact test, a laminated glass longevity
test and, most critically, requires all safety glass to
be permanently marked.
Put
simply, if it is not marked it is not a safety glass.
|
The
following pages summarise where Safety glazing should be
used and which PFG Products are best suited for these applications.
For more details refer to Part N of section 3 SABS 0400-1990

can be used. (Intruderprufe, ColourVue, SolarVue, Solarshield
or CoolVue.)
Windows
Any window with a sill height less than 500 mm shall be
glazed in safety glazing material. In addition, any window
positioned where persons are likely, on normal traffic routes
to move towards such window, shall either have a sill height
not less than 800 mm or shall be glazed with safety glazing
material.

Any one of PFG’s laminated glass products (Intruderprufe,
ColourVue, SolarVue, Solarshield or CoolVue), or PFG’s Toughened

Bath Enclosures

be glazed with safety glazing material.
PFG Products
PFG Armourplate or Armourscreen are the ideal products for
this application.
PFG’s laminated glass products (Intruderprufe, ColourVue,
SolarVue, Solarshield or CoolVue) can be used, but extra
precautions should be taken to seal the edges.
Shopfronts
Any glass used in any shopfront within 2100 mm from the
floor shall be glazed with safety glazing materials.
PFG Products
Either Intruderprufe or Armourplate can be used for this
application. In addition CoolVue can be used where Solar
control is essential.
Balustrades
All glazing to balustrades must be of safety
glasing material. NB the minimum height for balustrades
is 1000mm.
PFG Products
It is strongly recommended that glass in balustrading should
be Armourplate or Armourscreen, unless rigidly supported
all around in which case any of PFG’s laminated products
(Intruderprufe, ColourVue, SolarVue, Solarshield or CoolVue)
can be used.
Stairs
Safety glass is required in any wall or balustrade to a
stairway, ramp, landing or balcony, within 1800mm of the

PFG Products
While both toughened (Armourplate, Armourclad or Armourscreen)
and laminated safety glass (Intruderprufe, ColourVue, SolarVue,
Solarshield or CoolVue) can be used for this application,
it is however recommended that laminated glass should be
used where there is a danger of persons being hurt from
pieces of falling glass.
Mirror doors
When a mirror is used as a facing to a cupboard door less
than 800 mm above floor level and there is no solid backing,
ensure that the mirror is of safety glazing material.
Recommended Glazing Thicknesses
Internationally, annealed glass is controlled
by Building Regulations as to the thickness of glass relevant
to the size of a pane.
The chart is taken from the South African National Building
Regulations Section N.
