Solarshield

The challenge to create both attractive and highly efficient solar control buildings is effectively met by the SOLARSHIELD glass range. While reducing the amount of the sun’s heat entering through the windows, SOLARSHIELD also reduces the amount of light entering the interior.

SOLARSHIELD is a PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) Laminated Safety Glass which combines a metallic coating with a clear or tinted PVB interlayer or glass, which in addition to solar control has the added benefits of eliminating 99% of the damaging UV light, and can meet various levels of safety, security and noise reduction.

SOLARSHIELD is available in a range of colours and three densities of coating. The numbers S10/S20/S30 refer to the light transmission of the coating* which in turn is directly proportional to the amount of solar heat entering the building.

*(S10 with 10% light transmission on coated glass prior to lamination)

Suggested Applications

• Maximum solar energy control
• Curtain Walls
• External solar screens
• Skylights
• Glare reduction in buildings
• Glazed partitions and screens
• ‘One way’ vision panels
• Reflective glass for wall cladding
• Decorative safety mirrors
• Lift interiors

Product and Design Considerations

To assist in optimising design and specifications, PFG Building Glass offers a range of technical advisory service covering most appropriate product for each application, economy, thermal stability, Building Regulations, guarantees and local and international product standards. For maximum benefit to the project this should ideally commence before working drawings begin.

Edge Working

The edges of all heat absorbing glass should be polished to reduce the possibility of thermal breakage. Contact PFG Building Glass for a detailed Thermal stress calculation.

Environmental influences

Environmental influences The visual appearance of coated glasses is determined not only by the colour of the glass and the coating. It is also influenced by environmental factors such as solar angle, ambient light level and quality, reflections in the glass, and the viewing angle.

The chameleon behaviour of coated glass makes it imperative to assess the true colour and reflectance of the proposed product in the context of an exsisting building, failing which in a full-scale mock-up, before a final selection is made. PFG Building Glass is available to assist in this process.
