The principal challenge in the Flat Glass
manufacturing process is to produce a product which
has two flat, opposite surfaces which are parallel,
allowing for optically distortion- free vision.
In the past, the Plate Glass Process was used to produce
glass by grinding and polishing both sides. This resulted
in the absence of a fire finished surface although the
glass was optically perfect.
Another common method of producing Flat Glass was through
the Sheet Drawn Process. Although this glass was fire
finished, surface distortion was evident.
The problem of how to form high quality polished or
fire finished surfaces without the need for grinding
or polishing was eventually solved in the Float Glass
Process, introduced by Pilkington in 1959. This sophisticated,
high technology state-of-the-art process now accounts
for most of the world’s Flat Glass production.
The exceptional qualities inherent in Float Glass justify
its use as an essential element necessary for the further
processing of value added products such as Mirror, Laminated
and Toughened Glass.
PFG is the only Float Glass manufacturer in sub-Saharan
Africa and is certified by Lloyds of London to comply
